I am 32 and have had a history of missed periods but the pill fixed that and I had a high male hormone problem which was also lowered by the pill. I have been married two years and would like to get pregnant. The first day of my last period was April 20th. I have taken two pregnancy tests, both negative. My question is, could my male hormones interfere with the home pregnancy test? I have no symptoms of pregnancy that I know of right now.Susan

Irregular periods are not really “fixed” by the birth control pill. Rather, they are masked by the pill, while the underlying problem goes unchanged. A high male hormone level can be a manifestation of Stein-Leventhal Syndrome, which can be the cause of irregular periods, and failure to conceive. A doctor can diagnose this with an interview, exam, blood tests, and an ultrasound. A woman can contribute valuable information to this diagnosis by charting her menstrual cycles with a formal system such as the Creighton Model or the Billings Ovulation Method.
