Is Brown Discharge Normal?

Dear Lakshmi,
Several days of brown bleeding on the tail end of menses can indicate low progesterone levels. If this happens consistently, it can mean chronically low progesterone levels. If it is just on occasion, I would not be concerned about it.
In your case, you are breastfeeding, and I would assume have only recently returned to cycles, and some variation in the bleeding pattern is not unusual for the first three cycles while your body resumes normal menstrual cycles. It is common for a breastfeeding women just returning to cycles to observe signs we usually associate with low progesterone, such as short luteal phases. This can just be a temporary and normal adjustment to return to fertility.
You can become an expert in your own body, and observe your body resume a normal pattern of fertility, by learning to chart not only your period, but the hormonally influenced signs produced by your body throughout the rest of the cycle as well. Consult our online directory at www.canfp.org to find a professional you can consult to teach you how to do this.
