Is there a natural and effective form of birth control? I have had an IUD in for a few years but have had some annoying side effects such as acne. My mom actually got breast cancer through the use of the patch, and using an IUD to control hormones. I would love to get my IUD removed, however I am not ready to conceive another child yet. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated. Are there any devices that that can effectively moniter when a woman is fertile? Thanks so much, I hope to hear from you.

Is there a Natural and Effective Method for Avoiding Pregnancy?

Dear Christa,
I am glad to hear that you are looking for a natural means to avoid pregnancy. IUD’s, as well as other means of chemical contraception such as the Pill, can have a number of harmful side effects. The good news for you is that there is a safe, natural and effective means of avoiding pregnancy. Natural Family Planning is based upon keeping track of your body’s biological markers which tell you when you are fertile. Essentially, you learn how to read your body’s signals that it sends you each cycle telling you when you aren’t fertile and when you are.
There are a number of effective methods including: Creighton Model System, Billings Ovulation Method, and the Sympto-Thermal Method. From this site you can click on the “Find a Local Resource” link and find someone in your area who can teach you about NFP. Good Luck!
