My wife is pregnant (45 days) and has been spotting 13 days until now. By sonography, the embryo is normal but doctor gave her cyclogest 400mg twice a day for 7 days and 400mg once a day for 14 days.  We are worried about the side effect of it.  She is at home, with complete bed rest and doesn’t work (she is dentist).  Please guide us: if we cut the cyclogest, do we have abortion? (She aborted 7 months ago, embryo 45 days with spotting and bleeding)

Difficult Pregnancy

Cyclogest is natural progesterone, identical to what your wife’s own ovary makes and in later pregnancy, identical to what the developing placenta makes. It is used frequently in infertility patients and women who have trouble maintaining a pregnancy, or with threatened miscarriage.
Sometimes low progesterone can cause a miscarriage, so Cyclogest/progesterone can be a cure for this situation. There is no harm to this medication, and there can be a definite benefit. Natural progesterone should NOT be confused with artificial progestins; some artificial progestins can be harmful and cause birth defects. Sometimes literature does not distinguish between natural progesterone and the artificial substances, so this causes confusion. Cyclogest (progesterone) does NOT cause birth defects. Progesterone is used in the first trimester in all the difficult IVF pregnancies in the USA. Best wishes to you and your wife for the health of this pregnancy.
