I am 34 yrs.old and 6 weeks pregnant. I have two sons 11 and 8. Three years ago I had a miscarriage at 8 weeks. I asked my physician about taking progesterone suppositories with this pregnancy and he thought that it was unnecessary since I have not had ongoing issues with fertility. My questions are – Are there any risks associated with taking progesterone? Why not give this as prophylactic tx given my age.

We have a great deal of information on our Ask the Expert site, from questions very similar to yours. Bottom line is, there are protocols for the use of progesterone in pregnancy, but unfortunately not all physicians are familiar with them. Your levels can be tested, and if low you can be supplemented, until such time as you maintain normal levels. It is better to employ such scientific standards than just always give progesterone, “just in case”. See 07:16:05https://canfp.org/artman/publish/cat_index_39.shtml
