I am 39 years old, taking oral contraceptives, usually not really on time with my period but it is generally a few days of bleeding around the week before it is meant to be according to the pill cycle. I am experiencing a swollen belly that feels like pregnancy, however I have done 3 tests all negative to that. I took one maybe 8 weeks ago when my breasts were really swollen and tender, then again a few weeks a go when my pelvis became swollen and it feels like pregnancy at 12 weeks. In the past few months my period has been just spotty and dark, more brown thick discharge than anything. I feel confused and a little afraid as to what this could be, I don’t want a pregnancy really at this stage but it does feel the same as my last one as far as the sensations that I am experiencing… what else can I look for ?

According to Pharmacists for Life 4-10 women in every 100 using the pill for one year do have a diagnosed pregnancy. There are undetected pregnancies occurring as well. This results in a loss of the new life because the baby is unable to implant in the womb of the mother. For more information on this and why this occurs go to www.pfli.org/faq-oc.html — the Pharmacists for Life website. However, three negative pregnancy tests would indicate that you are not pregnant.
So why do you feel pregnant? Without a lot of technical words, oral contraceptives- as well as other hormonal contraceptives -mimic pregnancy. You are feeling pregnant because of the birth control pill. There are many side effects of the pill, ranging from increased frequency of blood clots leading to heart attacks or strokes to bloating. See your doctor and get off of it. For more information on the side effects of the pill and a healthy safe alternative check out this website, www.canfp.org, or www.ccli.org.
