Temp is Behaving Oddly

Question

My husband and I have been practicing NFP for about 2.5 years now, since we married, and the last few months we have been actively trying to conceive.
This month, however, has been a bit odd. My pre-shift temperatures have been higher than normal (they are usually 96.8-97.1), around 97.5. My pre-shift 6 were 97.5, 97.3, 97.5, 97.5, 97.5, 97.1. On day 19 (when I have been having my temperature shifts for the last ten months), I shifted to 97.7, then 97.6, and have remained at 97.7 for the last three days. I had had plenty of fertile cervical mucus, and it has dried up, but I still have not had a full thermal shift.

I bought a new thermometer, and it is .4 degrees lower than my current one! I decided to start taking my B Complex again, to see if that would help.

So my question is, what would cause my pre-shift temperatures to be higher, but my luteal phase temps to be lower, despite no change in sleeping habits.

Thank you.

Lindsey

Hello Lindsey,

Our first suggestion would be for you to contact a Sympto-Thermal NFP teacher to look over your complete chart and the two previous charts. It is difficult to know what may be happening from the limited information you give. We would have several questions, among them: What is your complete mucus pattern in this and previous charts?; What was the high temperature level in your previous chart? What were your days of bleeding like in this cycle?; Did you use the new or old thermometer for this chart?

A few possibilities that come to mind are that you may be experiencing an anovulatory cycle, or a delayed ovulation (with another mucus patch and peak to come), or that you may have conceived in your previous cycle.

If you haven’t attended an NFP class, you can locate a Sympto-Thermal teacher on this CANFP website or go to www.ccli.org.
