My 15 year old girlfriend is on the birth control patch and she had her period this month and it was real heavy and she said chunks of clear pinkish stuff came out also. Â Then she was hurting real bad with cramps and aches. Â I was wondering if it could have been a miscarriage.

Was this a miscarriage during the pill?

Dear Questioner,
All hormonal contraceptives have the potential of working in three basic ways: 1) Decreasing the frequency of ovulation (but not eliminating ovulation); 2)Thickening the cervical mucus to decrease, but not eliminate, sperm penetration through the cervix; 3)Changing the inner lining (endometrium) to inhibit implantation of the embryo (new human life/person). None of these mechanisms are 100%. You can get pregnant on any of the hormonal contraceptives and then have a miscarriage. She would have had to have a pregnancy test at the time this occurred to know if she was pregnant. It certainly could have been a miscarriage.
She might want to consider using natural family planning if she is married or abstain from intercourse until she is married to avoid these and other complications in the future.
Thanks,
