Celebrating CANFP Professional Mary Davenport, MD

by Monica Gisla

A genius in the field of NaProTechnology, I could not have been in better hands than in the incredible care of Dr. Mary Davenport when I was struggling through the heart wrenching years of secondary infertility and miscarriage. My husband and I would travel an hour and a half to El Sobrante to see Dr. Davenport, and it was always well worth the time and effort. Never in a rush, she would spend at least an hour with us going through the details of my history, performing careful exams and developing a plan for us for the next few months. I remember feeling so relieved during these visits to have met a doctor who truly listened to all my concerns, as well as take seriously all my own research. In my mind, what makes Dr. Davenport shine and stand apart, even from other NaPro doctors, is her expertise and knowledge in nutrition and functional medicine as well as her insatiable appetite for learning. She is always gathering the most up to date research and practice, and never settles for the status quo. As a result of this, every time we saw her, she had new ideas for us to try, which was so encouraging when you feel like you have exhausted all possible options. She never let us give up hope!

In addition to her innovative spirit and outstanding medical knowledge, I was constantly impressed by her sweet and caring bedside manner. We always covered so much information in our appointments together that at times it felt very overwhelming. But Dr. Davenport, being the thoughtful person she is, would write up a one to two-page summary for me immediately following my visit, and I often found it in my inbox when I returned home. I would review these well-organized summaries during moments of great anxiety and discouragement, and I would immediately feel a wonderful sense of stability and peace wash over me. She had a plan, and I wasn’t alone, which made me feel like I might actually find the answer to the many challenges I faced. She would organize her thoughts of what I should try first and what I should try later making the whole journey feel more possible and hopeful.

Dr. Davenport is a true leader in the field of medicine and a trusting companion to communities of faith. In times of uncertainty, Dr. Davenport provided us with confident and morally sound guidance. It is a great source of consolation to have a Catholic doctor in our community who is not afraid to lead. Thank you for everything you have done for our family, for everything you have done for countless families in our community, and for your dedication to the values of good Catholic medicine.
