Are Clots Normal?

I am 38 years old. My period has lasted about a month, with light days, to no bleeding at all and now all of a sudden at just about the one month mark I am bleeding heavily. Each time I use the restroom to change I have a very large blood clot. I realize clotting is normal during menstruation, but how large of a clot is normal? These are gel like solid and a couple have been about 2 1/2 inches in diameter.

You are having abnormal vaginal bleeding and need an evaluation. If you are charting with a natural family planning method, particularly the Creighton Model of Fertility Care, the information can be used to help diagnose your problem and perhaps do a targeted hormone analysis. Your medical provider may also decide you need a pelvic ultrasound and or an office biopsy of the lining of the uterus.
