Diagnosed with Cervicitis
Question
I am a member of CANFP.
I have just been diagnosed with cervicitis. I noticed bright red “pen” marks on the tissue the last four cycles in the post ovulatory phase. Prior to this I have not experienced bleeding outside of my period, except for one time which I think was caused by herbs for acne. We have three children (9, 7, 4). I am 37 years old and have been using NFP for 12 years. We have never used any form of contraception. My doctor said the cervicitis might be caused by “banging” during intercourse. Is this true? What are the causes? The bleeding is making charting very difficult. What are your recommendations to help the cervicitis? The doctor did take a sample to check for a bacterial infection.

In cervicitis, the cervix can be infected with sexually transmitted bacteria such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, or ordinary vaginal bacteria such as streptococcus. Bacterial cervicitis can be treated with antibiotics. Other causes of cervicitis include the herpes virus, and chemicals such as those in douches or latex.
If persistent, cervicitis can be treated with chemicals cautery with silver nitrate, electrical cautery, hyfrecation or freezing. These methods convert the mucus-producing tissue to the tougher squamous epithelium. Care must be taken with these procedures to not overdo the destruction of the mucus-producing inner cervical tissue, which can impair fertility.
