Is This Menopause?

Hi,
Here is my background: 41 year old female, unable to get pregnant but did do several years of fertility treatments when I was in my 30’s. My mom died of ovarian cancer. I have always had a very regular cycle – every 28 days. The last year they have been changing to about every 24 – 26 days. This month I did not have a period at all – but instead had brown spotting for six days now (and I usually only have a period for two days). My question, could this be the beginning of menopause? Is this normal? Should I see my doctor?

You have a history of infertility, but do not state what the diagnosis was. If you had a hormonal imbalance, which is highly possible with your history of infertility and 2 day menstruations, then this bleed may just be reflective of that. However, I certainly would recommend consulting your physician when anyone has unusual bleeding, and in your case you have the additional concern re: your family history. Unusual bleeding is certainly more common in the 40’s, but it is still wise to consult your physician to rule out serious concerns.
