Painful Intercourse

Question

I was married in AugustĀ and I am 25 years old. Six months prior to that my husband and I didn’t have sex…a “second virginity” idea. About a year before we got married, I started experiencing pain and bleeding during sex. It felt like he was hitting something so we tried a lot of different positions. Sometimes it was okay and sometimes we just had to stop it was so painful. I forgot about it with the wedding planning and abstinence. Between the wedding night and honeymoon we had sex three times and each time was painful to very painful and spotty to heavy bleeding. I saw my physician, and he did a pap test (negative) and a pelvic external/internal ultrasound which did not show any abnormalties. Since the ultrasound we have had sex twice with little bleeding or pain. My period started yesterday but is light, dry and brown in color. The brown prior to actual bleeding started about the same time as the pain (1 yr, 4 mo). I used to take birth control but stopped as it made me feel sick, and currently use the family-planning method. My doctor thinks the pain might be more of a sensitivity or stress issue, but reading the questions on this forum and online I am not sure that is all it is. I would appreciate any assistance you can provide!

Dear Angie:

Bleeding with intercourse is often from the cervix. Pain with intercourse can be related to the cervix or it might be a sign you have endometriosis or some other pelvic problem, even severe constipation.

Endometriosis should especially be considered if the pain with intercourse is mostly in the late luteal or post-peak phase and during menses. Other symptoms that would suggest endometriosis include pain with bowel movements and or urination during the late luteal phase or during menses.

I would suggest that you look for clues in your NFP charting and get another exam by the same physician or by another if the pain and or bleeding continue. It would be helpful if you kept a symptom diary that you could correlate with your charting.
