What to Expect Stopping Pill at 52

Dear Shuri,
This will vary for each women. Some women may experience a delay in returning to normal cycles, known as post-pill amenorrhea.(The pill prevents your body from making hormones involved in ovulation and menstruation and it can take your body some time to return to normal production of these hormones.) Then some women may ovulate in four to six weeks.
You may be peri-menopausal or in menopause. In peri-menopause your cycles may be irregular and anovulatory. Unusual bleeding may be observed. The mucus patterns may be irregular. Early ovulation may occur. Menopause is usually defined as cessation of menstruation for one year associated with signs such as hot flashes and FSH changes. Consequently, monitoring your fertility is important.
Fertility rates decline after the age of 35, although naturally conceived pregnancies can occur up to the mid 50’s. In the United States between 1997 and 1999 there were 539 births to women over 50.
Natural Family Planning is one of the safest options. It monitors the fertility cycle, and can be easily learned from a trained Natural Family Planning teacher in your area. You should be able to look on this site to find one.
If you have concerns regarding any health issues contact your prescribing physician.
Wishing you peace and good health.
