“Do whatever He says,” Mary tells the servants when the wine had run out—-and after the servants filled the jars to the brim at Jesus request, the good wine was brought forth.
The first of Christ’s miracles was the blessing of a wedding feast. He manifested his power to show the unity of man and wife can be a reflection of the heavenly wedding feast of Christ and his bride, to which we are all called. Changing water into wine shows his tenderness to bring joy and celebration to the marital union, and not just to the couple, but to all the guests who are touched by their love.
In the Philippines, Pope Francis recently reaffirmed the teaching of Humanae Vitae, that love and life should always be connected. The encyclical teaches that if there are serious reasons to space births, the couples may have recourse to the natural rhythms of the body. These truths are written in our bodies in the way God created us, not made up rules, but in keeping with the wisdom of our creation. Love and life are great gifts from God. Understanding our bodies, through learning natural family planning, brings greater appreciation of His gifts, whether a couple is hoping to bring a new life into existence, or spacing their children.
Having Christ present in marriage, as in the wedding feast at Cana, transforms the everyday life into a celebration of love and life that will spread joy to those around us, and reflect the love Christ has for his bride
May we all reflect the trust Mary had and do whatever He tells us.
