Unable to achieve pregnancy following stillbirth

Question

I have two boys and two years ago I had a still born baby at 25 weeks. I now want to have another but I’m finding it hard. I’m 26 and my partner is 25. I went for a laparoscopy last year and every thing was fine but they did find a dermoid cyst. My periods come when they want to. I can bleed for months on end, or I can bleed one month then not for several. I’ve done all the ovulating kits but still nothing. Please could you try to help me with my problem?  Thank you.

Thank you for your question. With your history of irregular menses, the previous stillborn, and the previous dermoid cyst, it is very important to make an accurate diagnosis of your menstrual abnormality to help you have a healthy pregnancy in the future.

I would highly recommend that you learn the Creighton Method of natural family planning. This method will teach you how to chart your biological markers, such as type of mucus discharge and blood flow, in a very standardized fashion. The charts that are created give a wonderful reflection of your reproductive system and can be used by physicians trained in the Creighton Method to help diagnose and coordinate treatment for menstrual and fertility problems. This new emerging science of the medical applications of natural family planning is called NaProTechnology. NaProTechnology has been very successful in helping women achieve a pregnancy, as well as in decreasing their risk of miscarriage. The charts are an excellent health record, and can even be used to predict your risk of future problems, such as risk of breast and endometrial cancer, or osteoporosis.

I believe NaProTechnology would be extremely beneficial for you. Further information on finding a Natural Family Planning instructor or medical consultant in your area can be found in the professional directory on the CANFP website (www.canfp.org).

I wish you the best.

Sincerely,

Lynn Keenan, MD
