I’m 28 years old and my husband is 43. For two years we were trying to get pregnant. I got pregnant December last year and in January I had to terminate the pregnancy. Then in April I got pregnant again and in July I had a miscarriage. My periods are coming anywhere from the 11th-18th of every month and they are very heavy compared to before being pregnant. My health care provider wants to put me on birth control for 3 months to try to see if I can ovulate like I did before I got pregnant. I do know I don’t ovulate like I should. I took my temperature and charted it and it wasn’t like it should be. My question is should I take the pill and wait or should I take something to help me get pregnant before it’s too late?

Birth Control Pill for Infertility?

It sounds like the only evaluation of your fertility has been taking your temperature. While this is a good place to start, there is much more which needs to be done to determine why you have not conceived, or have miscarried when you did. The first step in treating any medical problem, is diagnosis. Inability to conceive is not a diagnosis, but a symptom. You need an evaluation, to determine what treatment might be indicated, to not only help you conceive, but to carry the pregnancy to term. The birth control pill neither diagnoses your problem, nor is it a treatment which is individualized to a particular problem. If you have a hormonal imbalance which is interfering with your fertility, it would make much more sense to identify the hormones which are out of balance, and correct those. I would recommend you consult a physician trained in doing this. We have a list of them on our website.
I think your instincts to question this treatment were correct. There are superior therapies available to you.
