Could thyroid be causing cycle irregularity?
Question
I had my thyroid removed 4 years ago and I am on .175 synthroid and .05 of cytomel. I have a healthy 15 month old and I have been trying to get pregnant again for 8 months. I am 38 and I got pregnant with my first on the first try.
Last month my period came 2 weeks early and my ovulation came late afterward. Could I have had a miscarriage? I am worried that my synthroid dose is causing difficulties.
I am not able to see my doctor as I am living in France for 5 months. What can I do???

Dear Caren,
There are many reasons for cycle irregularities – stress, premenopause, normal variation, change in weight, thyroid. I would doubt you had a miscarriage with an early period. An early miscarriage would be more likely to cause a late and heavy period. I would keep charting your cycles and get thyroid blood studies as soon as you can. Many women have an odd cycle occasionally, so I would not over-react unless it persists and becomes a pattern.
