My husband and I have been without birth control for over twelve years. We have two daughters, 15 and 12, and I had no problems conceiving either. We are both 36 and have been trying for about 5 years, thinking that our timing has been off. We are just now seeking medical advice on this condition. About one year ago, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and hypothyroid. I am currently on medication for this and just recently discovered that this could be contributing to our infertility problem. However, my OB/GYN is having me chart temperatures and it doesn’t appear that I am ovulating either. She is suggesting that I start Clomid and my fibro doctor is suggesting progesterone. If I utilize both – will this hurt?

It can take a while to obtain the full effect of thyroid treatment on the reproductive system. However, once your thyroid problem is corrected and you are not ovulating there may be some other reason such as polycystic ovary syndrome, elevated prolactin levels, or even pre-menopause. After a workup, Clomid and/or progesterone could be a logical treatment depending on the cause of the lack of ovulation.
