Trying to Become Pregnant Post-Pill

Question

My husband and I are trying to get pregnant… we have been trying for 3 months and just began our 4th month cycle. I have been having fairly consistent cycles, 30-32 days long with periods ever since I quit the pill in Aug. I am 28 yrs. old and my husband is 30. We of course are disappointed that we aren’t pregnant yet, though we’ve been told it could take up to a year. One question we had was about trying to keep my husbands semen inside after we have sex. I have tried putting a pillow under my hips and sitting up side down, to let gravity work in our favor, but it seems that as soon as I sit upright, a lot of his semen leaks out of me, and I’m afraid that we aren’t getting enough sperm into me for conception. Is this normal to lose so much semen after sex? Is the sperm that is necessary already on its way after he ejaculates? Any advice you can give would be so helpful. Thank you.

First, let me alleviate your fear that you are losing your husband’s semen. Once sperm have entered the vaginal canal it takes approximately 20 minutes for them to reach the Fallopian tubes. I recommend to my clients that they lie still for at least 30 minutes after intercourse before they get up. After that, leakage is not a problem.

The thing that caught my attention when reading your question was that you came off the Birth Control Pill (BCP) in August. As a Creighton Model practitioner of Natural Family Planning we recommend waiting six cycles after coming off the BCP before trying to conceive. This ensures that your body will rid itself of the chemicals in the BCP. This six months is a good time to learn a method of Natural Family Planning. NFP is wonderful for helping a couple pinpoint the best days for achieving a pregnancy because it teaches you how to identify the signs of fertility.

Let me also mention that only 76% of couples of normal fertility achieve a pregnancy the first cycle they try. This number is for couples that learned about their fertility using the Creighton Model of NFP.
