Will Cautery Reduce Mucus?

Question

My husband and I are having difficulty identifying my peak day. For example, this cycle I had ten consecutive days of peak-type mucus (10ck). Currently we are trying to avoid pregnancy. We have been married 4.5 weeks and have not had a true “green day” yet. We have been told that I have cervical ectropion and late luteal phase defect. We thought it was strange that I had been diagnosed with cervical ectropion since I am 27 years old, and have never been on birth control, and have no post coitus bleeding….which we read are all associated with the condition. We are going to get a second opinion before we dive into treating the late luteal phase defect.
Our physician told us that even if we decide not to treat the low progesterone, treating the cervical ectropion with a hyfrecation procedure will clear up some of the abnormal mucus and allow us to better identify the true peak day. Could you tell us if this procedure will help with the abnormal mucus?

Any other thoughts you have would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Dear Alena,

With regards to the cervical ectropion, it can be suggested by the charting and confirmed by a physical examination. The procedure is very effective for treating continuous mucus discharges that are due to ectropion. Before treating an ectropion, think about how long you want to avoid pregnancy since the hyfrecator cautery procedure will temporarily injure the cervical opening.

One thing to consider since you have been married less than two months is that the stress of your lifestyle change could be causing increased pre-peak peak-type mucus even if true double peaks are not seen. A concern about a luteal phase defect, which would often manifest as a short post-peak phase, could be confirmed by checking estradiol and progesterone levels on days peak +3, 5, 7, 9 and 11.
