NFP Challenged Our Relationship

Fall 2023

Our journey with Natural Family Planning (NFP) was far from easy.

Carlos, a committed Protestant, and I, raised in a Catholic family, faced a significant hurdle as our wedding drew near. Carlos came to realize that I intended to use NFP, a method he disagreed with due to its abstinence periods. This conflict even led us to contemplate the possibility of canceling the wedding. We were both heartbroken. After a week of turmoil, Carlos, aware of the side effects of contraceptives, agreed to adopt NFP, hoping I might eventually change my mind.

We married in 2009, and over time, Carlos and I became firm believers in the method’s effectiveness for spacing our children. Moreover, we discovered additional benefits that contributed to our happiness. NFP strengthened our bond as we openly discussed my fertility. Abstinence periods created a honeymoon-like phase, anticipating intimate moments. Additionally, Carlos gained better self-control of his sexuality, a struggle for many men in a culture where thinking constantly about sex is often considered “normal.”

After nine years of marriage, Carlos’ curiosity about the Church’s teachings on sexuality, led him to delve into the Catholic faith. Convinced of its truths, he received the Sacrament of Confirmation in May 2018. Today, we both serve as instructors for the Sympto-Thermal Method of NFP through the Couple to Couple League.

Using NFP, we continually discern the size of our family, involving God and remaining open to life; confident that Natural Family Planning is a cornerstone upholding the strength and joy in our marriage.

The Long and Winding Road: Becoming an NFP Only Physician

As far as I could remember, I have always seen myself as a feminist. I was all about women empowerment and women’s rights, which included advocating the right to take fertility into one’s own hands. Independence was all about moving through, in and around society without the “baggage” of kids...

Long and Winding Road to Parenthood

Our path to NaPro was long and winding. We experienced two heartbreaking miscarriages in the early years of our marriage followed by seven years of infertility. Discouragement had definitely set in when dear friends referred us to Dr. Amie Holmes. She performed laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis and ovarian cysts, then...

Trusting in God’s Care

My wife, Rita, and I were married in 1985 and by the year 1990 we had three beautiful children, Natalie, Joseph and Nicole. We knew that although it would be expensive, our children would be educated through the Catholic school system. I was a deputy sheriff with the Sacramento County...

Pastor Shares Why He Came with Seven Parish NFP Teaching Couples to State Conference

“Of all the Church ministries, this is the most fundamental for healing a society that faces destruction for having lost the connection between love and life due to contraceptive sex. The future of the Church and of the world depends on couples who understand and live God’s plan written into...

God Worked in My Life Through Bold Catholic Lay Leaders

Walking in Darkness

“Does that look like a line”? “Yep, that’s a line.” So began our joys that would turn into sorrows. My wife and I had been married for four years, and while we had been seeking children, we’d been unable to conceive. In the grand scheme of things four years isn’t...

NFP: Plot Twists From the Great Director and Scriptwriter

“You know this is just a movie, right?” replied my husband Mark, as he graciously changed the channel. The movie had gotten too scary and depicted a scene that I know would give me nightmares. The only way I could control the movie was to not watch it. Sound familiar?...

Reflecting on Two Decades of CANFP Membership

Attending the HV50 Conference in July 2018 has given me occasion to reflect on my 22 years as a member of CANFP and what it has meant to me. Not only was I strengthened and enriched at the HV50 Conference but I was also able to visit with old friends...
