I recommend that patients have intercourse 10-14 days following vasovasostomy (assuming there is no undue swelling, bruising, or discomfort) because one of the best ways to keep the very delicate, tiny channels in the vasa open is to push sperm through them. The current technique used in reconnecting the vasa uses very tiny but very strong, permanent nylon sutures that do not dissolve to create a water-tight closure. After surgery the inner lining of the vasa heals and seals the anastomotic junction very quickly. So the vasa are ready to resume their rightful job in sperm transport fairly soon following surgery.
