Are Fibroids Causing Bleeding During Pregnancy?

Hello, I am 45 years old and have large fibroids. I was about to have surgery to remove the womb. I am now seven weeks pregnant and have been bleeding for four days now. It started out brown in color but it is now almost red in color. Now and again I see a small piece or clot. I was having some pain and I took Panadol. My pressure is a little high and I am taking Aldomet 500mg three time a day. Is this ok? I am taking one Natele tablet daily and one folic acid daily. The doctor gave me cyclogest to insert one per night. Is the bleeding coming from the fetus or is it happening because of the fibroids?

Dear Jackie,
About 25% of women have spotting or bleeding in early pregnancy. There can be different causes. Among them are implantation bleeding, hormonal (low progesterone), infection, partial separation of the sac, polyps, fibroids. Your doctor is properly treating you for low progesterone. There is no way to know how much the fibroids are contributing; usually it is not much once pregnancy begins. You just need to wait it out and not exercise, do heavy lifting or have sexual relations until the problem resolves. Hopefully it will resolve before the end of the first trimester.
