Confused by Unusual Bleeding
Question
Okay, I have a question about implantation bleeding and/or an irregular period. My cycle is almost 29 days to the tee every month. On day 21 I had completely unprotected sex and he did not pull out. About six hours later I started a very light period that lasted only about 48 hours then stopped. I usually have VERY heavy periods that last a whole seven days, and the fact that this one was so light, short, and early scared me. It has never happened to me before. I also am under absolutely no stress, so I know that it cannot be a factor.

Implantation does not occur immediately after intercourse, thus bleeding that occurs six hours after intercourse cannot be implantation bleeding (at least not from that act of intercourse). It is possible it is implantation bleeding if you had intercourse a week or two earlier which resulted in conception. There are many other reasons besides stress, menstruation, or implantation for unusual bleeding. Often, the cause need not be a cause for concern, as is transitory, such as an occasional anovulatory cycle. Other reasons for unusual bleeding can be more serious, and are best explored with your physician. A woman who charts the biological markers of her cycles will have added insight into the nature of unusual bleeding she might observe, placing it in the context of the timing of events of her cycle.
