I am a newlywed, just got married on Saturday Aug 18th. Well on that morning I started my menstrual, my new husband and I never had been together before, and felt anxious, so we had sexual intercourse for the 1st time and he came in me. The same happened the next day, but my question is, can I get pregnant while on my period? And I wanted to know about the IUD, and if it would be right for me?

Could I Get Pregnant on My Period?

Dear Cassidy,
If you have a short cycle there is a possibility for fertility to begin early and overlap with your menses. For that reason we teach couples to consider their menses as a time of fertility until they have established enough cycles and knowledge to determine if it is fertile or not.
You asked about an IUD. Yes, they are effective, but there are major side effects: heavy, irregular or painful menses, painful intercourse, infection, ectopic pregnancy, perforation of the uterus, and infertility. It is important to know that the IUD is not a contraceptive method. It does not prevent ovulation or fertilization, but rather it prevents implantation of a new life, hence, pregnancy occurs when using the IUD. Natural Family Planning is just as effective with none of the negative side effects.
Please check the web site for more information and local instruction in this method. With more information you may find NFP to be a great alternative to artificial methods.
Congratulations of your recent marriage; may it be a long and happy union!
