Should I Be Worried?

Dear CANFP,
I’m a 25 year old single mother with one child. I do not want to have another right now. I’m holding off from sex until I finish school and get married. The other day my boyfriend tried to have sex with me and he let the head of his penis touch the opening of my vagina but it did not penetrate. He said that he did not pre-ejaculate or ejaculate at all. I’m not sure so I wanted to know: can I get pregnant from him just letting the head of his penis touch the opening of my vagina? I recently had my period. Do I need to worry and get a test or am I ok? My period usually comes earlier than this but since I’ve had my baby it comes when it wants to seems like. Please help me!

I encourage you to contact an NFP teacher to learn to chart your cycle, and gain support in your commitment to wait for sex until you finish school and get married. To realize all the benefits of waiting for sex until you are married, which include avoiding a pregnancy and so much more, you need to abstain from the type of activity you are describing as well. This activity can result in pregnancy, is not freeing you from the anxiety of worrying if you may be pregnant, and is a frustrating, at best, way for you and your boyfriend to pursue your relationship. It is difficult to abstain from sex with each other when you have established other patterns, but certainly do-able. The key is in setting very clear limits to your expressions of affection, and these limits should mean you avoid all genital contact. In this way, you can free yourself from being anxious over possibility of pregnancy, and you and your boyfriend can begin to lay a foundation of trust and respect that will provide the framework for a healthy and enduring relationship. I congratulate you on your commitments, and encourage you to seek support in fulfilling them!
