My boyfriend and I have been dating for a year and nine months now and we have been trying to have a baby for the past six months. I have been spotting for a month and a half and now I don’t know what to do. I have been to the doctor to see if I was pregnant but I wasn’t. Â We have been trying ever since then and I don’t know what to do. We really want this baby more than any thing. Could you please help me?

Dear Kemia,
Without a medical history I can only make suggestions that may apply to several situations. Do not worry, six months is not long enough to be an infertility problem. A woman is only fertile a few days each cycle and you may not be trying on those days. Stress and anxiety may also be a cause of reduced fertility. Past contraceptive use can also be a big part of the problem as it can damage some of the functions required for ovulation (release of the mature egg from the ovary) or fertilization of the egg and maintaining the pregnancy. The thing to do would be to observe your symptoms and chart them, according to one of the modern methods of Natural Family Planning. This will allow you to identify the fertile days so that the opportunity to achieve a pregnancy is not missed. It will also be helpful in finding an explanation for the spotting. If you are completely normal, or if you suffer from reduced fertility, by making daily observations you will know your fertile days when they occur, even if rarely. As the reproductive system begins to normalize without interferences (stress, illness, and residual contraceptive effects) you will notice an increase in healthy fertile symptoms. When you recognize a normal pattern of fertility and pregnancy is still not possible, this indicates that the husband should be tested. I urge you both to learn the Billings Ovulation Method because of the ease of use and the peace of mind it allows for when planning your family, your future!
