Attending the HV50 Conference in July 2018 has given me occasion to reflect on my 22 years as a member of CANFP and what it has meant to me. Not only was I strengthened and enriched at the HV50 Conference but I was also able to visit with old friends and colleagues with whom I have been able to stay connected through CANFP. Some of these friends I met at my very first CANFP Conference in 1996, to which I came not knowing anyone, but with every confidence that I would be warmly welcomed. Within a couple of years of attending my first CANFP Conference I was trained to become a certified NFP Instructor, and the bonds I have shared with my fellow practitioners have only become stronger. Through subsequent CANFP Conferences, Archdiocesan meetings, regional get-togethers, and NFP Enrichment Classes, I have been so blessed to maintain my ties with both the English speaking and Spanish speaking NFP communities. CANFP has contributed greatly to this ongoing growth by presenting and hosting many of these classes and events, in addition to the many CANFP Conferences held in different areas of our beautiful Golden State through the years. The 50th Anniversary of Humanae Vitae, and all that this momentous occasion signifies, especially with the Canonization of Pope Paul VI, is the perfect chance for me to express my gratitude. CANFP has been with me at every step: thanks!

A Journey Worth Taking
Our Natural Family Planning journey has not always been an easy one, but I am able to stand here today and say that it was all worth it. In hindsight, I have always had a fairly accurate handle on my own cycles, but I didn’t get super serious about it...
The Long and Winding Road: Becoming an NFP Only Physician
As far as I could remember, I have always seen myself as a feminist. I was all about women empowerment and women’s rights, which included advocating the right to take fertility into one’s own hands. Independence was all about moving through, in and around society without the “baggage” of kids...
Learning to Live Out Our Love for Each Other
At our wedding, Julie and I promised to be true to each other. For us, the effectiveness of NFP was not measured by prevention of conception, but by the extent to which it helped us live our marriage in the most truthful way possible. It’s not perfection of a technique,...
The Heartbreaking Paradox of IVF
In our five year struggle with infertility, the first suggestion from friends and coworkers was always, “why don’t you try IVF?”. These were well-meaning people, who understood the natural yearning for a child that a happy couple has. As a nurse working in the ER, my coworkers were especially perplexed...
Answering the Call
To me, being a Professional Member of CANFP means belonging to an elite group of people in California who are doing God’s work. I am a Creighton Model FertilityCare Practitioner (FCP). Before becoming an FCP, I had a nearly 16year career in agricultural finance. I loved my career and serving...
One Guy’s Challenges
My wife Cassandra and I were married May, 1, 1993. From the beginning of our marriage we wanted to understand and practice natural family planning as the means by which we could live out our vows to each other as well as the Catholic Church’s teachings on the beauty and...
Questioning the Status Quo of the Pill Changed Our Lives
When my husband Zach and I married, like every one of my girlfriends, I began taking the birth control pill without hesitation. It was just something every young married woman did, like any other “to do” on the wedding planning checklist: book florist, select responsorial psalm, pick up birth control...
A Note to Husbands
My wife and I have been married for almost seven years. We both come from large families; we each have nine siblings. Needless to say, our parents are models for the fullness and happiness that results in marriages when they live the truth of the Church’s teachings. Before our wedding...
